Welcome!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 30, 2012 by Charles Scott

Hi everyone!

Welcome! I’m glad you came.

Our space here is an opportunity for us to share resources and ideas, to talk about the assignments, courses, readings, the entire TESL/FL program, what’s going on in our lives. I will post messages that include suggestions, comments, and feedback, as well as uploading files that might be helpful For example, I will post my PPT on how to structure a good essay.

Feel free to add your comments. You can reply to each of my postings and if you want to create a posting, just let me know and we can make that happen. This blog is supposed to consist of conversations between us all, so please contribute. We can all help each other. And feel free to include links to cool sites, things you like, or upload files you think would be helpful.

To begin, here is a link I have shared with some of you about accents. NNESTs always feel they have to have “perfect” English accents to be considered competent English speakers (and we forget what Vivian Cook said about multicompetence!). A question to consider when you watch this video: which accent is “perfect” or “correct” or “best”?

NNESTs think their English accents are not good or not acceptable. But shouldn’t a Chinese or Korean person have a Chinese of Korean accent when speaking English? I think so. I also think that each person’s accent is unique and a wonderful expression of who you are. Anyway, here is Amy Walker in a video about accents: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UgpfSp2t6k

Oooh! I have another Amy Walker link that I think you guys can relate to. It’s about identity. But I’ll create another posting for that.
